Comprehensive sports medicine consultation and management
Advanced surgical and non-surgical joint care
Shoulder, wrist, and knee
Platelet-rich plasma and hyaluronic acid injections
From non-surgical regenerative treatments to advanced orthopedic consultations and surgical care, CPS offers the full spectrum of sports medicine services.
Expert assessment and diagnosis of sports-related injuries and musculoskeletal conditions. Our physicians develop personalized treatment plans tailored to your sport, activity level, and health goals.
State-of-the-art surgical management of knee, shoulder, elbow, hip, foot, and ankle conditions by two fellowship-trained surgeons with subspecialty expertise in sports injuries and joint reconstruction.
A minimally invasive, in-office arthroscopic technique using a micro-camera to directly visualize joint surfaces in the shoulder and knee -- enabling precise, same-day diagnosis and visually-guided therapeutic injections with minimal recovery time.
A minimally invasive release of the transverse carpal ligament through a single small incision at the wrist crease, rather than an open incision in the palm. The Arthrex CenterLine™ endoscope provides direct visualization of the ligament throughout the release.
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy uses your own blood's natural healing factors, concentrated and injected directly into injured tendons, ligaments, or joints to accelerate tissue repair and reduce pain — without surgery.
Viscosupplementation injections (including Durolane, Synvisc-One, and Cingal) lubricate arthritic joints, reducing pain and stiffness while improving range of motion — an effective non-surgical option for knee and hip osteoarthritis.
Two fellowship-trained orthopedic sports medicine surgeons, each with subspecialty expertise, united by a commitment to getting you back in the game.

Dr. Bogdan A. Matache is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon and Assistant Professor at the University of Ottawa, specializing in complex knee reconstruction and arthroscopy of the hip and shoulder. His practice is dedicated to joint preservation through advanced, evidence-based arthroscopic techniques.
Dr. Matache completed his medical degree at McGill University and his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Ottawa, followed by two subspecialty fellowships: upper extremity surgery at the Roth|McFarlane Hand & Upper Limb Centre in London, Ontario, and orthopedic sports medicine at NYU Langone Health in New York City. He also holds a Diploma in Sport and Exercise Medicine from the Canadian Academy of Sport and Exercise Medicine.
His clinical experience extends to the highest levels of competitive sport. Dr. Matache is a team physician for the Ottawa Charge, Ottawa 67s and Gatineau Olympiques, and a surgical consultant to Ottawa Rapid FC, Atlético Ottawa, and the varsity athletics programs at the University of Ottawa and Carleton University. He served as lead orthopedic surgeon for the host medical team at the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship, and during his fellowship in New York worked with the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars.
Dr. Matache takes an individualized approach to every patient. He believes good surgical care begins with an accurate diagnosis and a clear understanding of what a patient is trying to get back to — elite competition, a physically demanding job, or simply moving without pain. When surgery is appropriate, his goal is to provide technically precise, proven treatment and to guide patients through every stage of recovery.
He is an active clinical researcher, with more than 60 peer-reviewed journal publications and multiple textbook chapters to his name, and holds peer-reviewed grant funding as principal investigator. He chairs the Research Committee of the Arthroscopy Association of Canada, serves on the Arthroscopy Association of North America’s Surgical Skills Committee, and is vice-chair of the PWHL Research Committee.
Dr. Matache is a regular invited lecturer and surgical skills instructor at national and international meetings, including Arthroscopy Association of North America courses in Chicago. He has contributed to numerous international consensus statements on shoulder instability, patellar instability and knee cartilage injury, and supervises the University of Ottawa’s Comprehensive Knee and Hip Preservation fellowships.
Through a shared decision-making process, Dr. Matache will help you get back to performing at your highest level through an accurate diagnosis, skilled execution of the treatment plan selected, and a recovery guided from start to finish.

Dr. Mike Pickell is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon and Assistant Professor at the University of Ottawa, specializing in complex knee and shoulder reconstruction and sports medicine. His practice is dedicated to the management of challenging knee and shoulder injuries, with particular expertise in complex soft-tissue reconstruction and restoration of joint function.
Dr. Pickell's training includes orthopedic residency and advanced trauma fellowship training at Queen's University, followed by a highly specialized sports medicine fellowship at NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York City. This extensive training has provided him with expertise in the treatment of complex injuries in both athletes and active individuals.
His clinical experience extends to the highest levels of competitive sport. Dr. Pickell serves as a Team Physician for the Ottawa Senators and Ottawa Red Blacks, caring for athletes who depend on expert diagnosis, precise treatment, and a safe return to performance.
Dr. Pickell takes a careful, individualized approach to every patient. He believes the best surgical care begins with understanding the patient, establishing an accurate diagnosis, and taking the time to explain treatment options clearly. When surgery is appropriate, his goal is to provide technically precise, evidence-based care while guiding patients through every stage of recovery.
His academic work focuses on improving orthopedic outcomes, optimizing pain management, and reducing opioid use following surgery. He is an active member of leading international sports medicine organizations, including AANA, AOSSM, and ISAKOS.
Whether treating a high-level athlete or an active individual looking to return to the activities they enjoy, Dr. Pickell's goal is the same: to provide exceptional care, restore function, and help every patient move forward with confidence.

No referral is required — you are welcome to contact us directly to arrange a consultation. We are also happy to receive referrals from your family doctor or another specialist if you have one.
You can typically expect a virtual consultation within one week, and an in-person consultation within two to three weeks.
All surgical procedures are performed at the Centre d’excellence en orthopédie de Montréal (CEOM), a private surgical facility in Laval, Quebec. CEOM is a purpose-built orthopedic centre, and your procedure is performed there by your CPS surgeon.
Not for your consultation. In-person consultations take place in Ottawa, and virtual consultations by video are also available — many patients choose these for an initial assessment or a second opinion. In-person consultations can also take place at CEOM if preferable. Travel to Montreal is generally only necessary for the surgery itself. Patients are to arrange their own transportation to and from CEOM, although our office can help coordinate it if needed.
Yes — consultations and surgeries at Capital Performance Surgery are provided privately. You will be given the full cost of your consultation and of any recommended procedure up front, before you commit to anything, so there are no hidden fees or unexpected charges later. If you decide not to proceed after your consultation, nothing further is owed.
Coverage varies considerably between plans, so you will need to confirm with your own insurance provider what is claimable in your case. Many extended health plans do cover treatments such as platelet-rich plasma and hyaluronic acid injections. We can issue receipts and any insurance paperwork you need to submit a claim.
Post-operative appointments for Ottawa-based patients take place at The Ottawa Hospital – Civic Campus Plaster Clinic. Patients who live outside Ottawa can have their follow-ups arranged virtually with their treating surgeon, so there is no need to travel back to Montreal for routine post-operative care.
Our surgeons manage sports and musculoskeletal injuries of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip and knee — including ligament and cartilage injuries, instability, tendon tears, meniscal problems and arthritis. We also offer non-surgical options such as platelet-rich plasma and hyaluronic acid injections, and in-office diagnostic arthroscopy. If you are not sure whether your problem is something we treat, contact our office and we will let you know.
Rehabilitation begins immediately after surgery and is guided by a written, procedure-specific protocol that we share with you and your physiotherapist. Our published protocols are available on this site under Rehabilitation Protocols, so you and your therapist know exactly what to expect at each stage of recovery.
Yes. Consultations are available in both English and French.
